डेविड एब्राहम चेउलकर – (21 June 1909 – 2 January 1982) जो हमेशा एक अंकल या पिता सामान व्यक्ति की भूमिका में ही नज़र आये।

डेविड का शुरूआती जीवन बहुत संघर्षपूर्ण रहा
डेविड का जन्म 1909 में 21 जून को हुआ। उनके पिता रेलवे में काम करते थे लेकिन जब वो सिर्फ़ 6 साल के थे तभी उनके पिता का इंतक़ाल हो गया था ऐसे में वो अपने बड़े भाई शेलोन के काफ़ी क़रीब आ गए। और फिर अपने भाई की इच्छा के मुताबिक़ पढ़-लिख कर वक़ील बनने की तैयारी में जुट गए। स्नातक के बाद ढेरों उम्मीदें लिए जब वो संघर्ष के मैदान में उतरे तो 6 लम्बे साल गुज़र गए पर स्ट्रगल था कि ख़त्म ही नहीं हो रहा था। इतने सालों की नाकाम कोशिशों से उनका आत्मविश्वास भी डगमगाने लगा था पर उन्होंने उम्मीद नहीं छोड़ी।
इस दौरान डेविड कभी-कभी स्टेज पर एक्टिंग कर लिया करते थे। क्योंकि अभिनय और स्टेज की दुनिया उन्हें हमेशा अपनी तरफ़ खींचती थी इसीलिए एक दिन उन्होंने फैसला किया कि वो अभिनय में ही अपना करियर बनाएंगे। उनके एक दोस्त थे नायमपल्ली जो फिल्मों में चरित्र कलाकार के तौर पर काम किया करते थे। उनकी मदद से डेविड को मोहन भवनानी के साथ काम करने का मौक़ा मिल गया। उनकी पहली फ़िल्म रही-ZAMBO – हाँलाकि उस समय वो युवा थे पर फ़िल्म में उनका रोल था एक बुज़ुर्ग व्यक्ति का, और वो इमेज ऐसे उनसे चिपकी की मुझे तो याद नहीं पड़ता कि किसी फ़िल्म में उन्होंने कोई युवा किरदार निभाया हो।

डेविड को फ़िल्मी दुनिया हमेशा रोमांचित करती थी। उनका मानना था कि फ़िल्म स्टूडियो किसी विश्वविद्यालय जैसे ही होते हैं। जहाँ आपको हर तरह के अनुभव होते हैं , जहाँ लोगों के हाव-भाव और व्यवहार को समझने की क़ाबिलियत मिलती है। 1937 से 1940 तक का समय डेविड के लिए भी सीखने का रहा क्योंकि उन दिनों उन्होंने अभिनेता, सहायक निर्देशक, प्रोडक्शन मैनेजर से लेकर क्लैप-बॉय, क्लर्क और टेलीफोन ऑपरेटर तक का काम किया। लेकिन 1940 में उनका ये काम छूट गया— अब वो फिर से बेरोज़गार थे। पर इस बार उन्होंने कम तनख़्वाह पर दूसरी फ़िल्म कंपनी में काम करना शुरू कर दिया, लेकिन ये काम भी जल्दी ही छूट गया।
काम छूटने और नया काम पाने की असफल कोशिशों के बीच डेविड ने अपनी वक़ालत की उस पढाई को पूरा करने का मन बनाया, जो उन्होंने फिल्मों में आने से पहले शुरू तो की थी पर बीच में ही छूट गई थी। फिर वक़ालत पूरी हुई और डेविड के नाम के साथ जुड़ गया BA LLB पर इससे काम पाने में कोई मदद नहीं मिली। इस दौरान फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्री बदलने लगी थी लोग अब स्टूडियो सिस्टम से अलग स्वतंत्र रूप से काम करने लगे थे।

फिल्मों में डेविड का सुनहरा दौर
डेविड भी काम तो कर रहे थे पर उनका अच्छा समय आया 50 के दशक में। इसी दशक में आई थी उनकी यादगार फ़िल्म “बूट पॉलिश” जिन्होंने भी ये फ़िल्म देखी होगी वो जॉन चाचा को भूले नहीं होंगे। उनका ये रोल इतना प्रभावशाली था कि वो जॉन चाचा के रूप में ही मशहूर हो गए थे और इस के लिए उन्हें फ़िल्मफ़ेयर का सर्वश्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेता का पुरस्कार भी मिला। इस फ़िल्म में उनके साथ बेबी नाज़ और मास्टर रतन के अभिनय को भी बेहद पसंद किया गया।
फ़िल्मों में डेविड का बेहतरीन समय आया 1950 के मध्य से जब डेविड एक समय में 4-5 फिल्में कर रहे थे। जैमिनी और AVM स्टूडियोज की लगभग हर हिंदी फ़िल्म में उनका होना तय था। इसी तरह ऋषिकेश मुखर्जी, बासु चैटर्जी जैसे फिल्मकारों की फ़िल्मों में भी उनके लिए ख़ास रोल होता था। इससे पहले उन्होंने ख़्वाजा अहमद अब्बास की भी कई फिल्मों में काम किया। तो 1950 से 1975 तक वो फ़िल्मों में छाए रहे।

वहाँ उन्होंने एक फ़िल्म बनाई-LOVE IN CANADA , कई नाटकों में अभिनय किया, एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री फ़िल्म बनाई और कई स्टेज शोज़ किये। वो कई यूरोपीय और भारतीय भाषाएँ बोल लिया करते थे। डेविड ने 40 सालों में क़रीब ढाई सौ फ़िल्मों में काम किया, इनमें अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय फ़िल्म THE RIVER और NINE HOURS TO RAMA भी शामिल है।
डेविड की मृत्यु
